Was high school social studies teacher in Miami, Florida 33 years so always have appreciation for quality textbooks. I was at war though with administrators and policy makers re reading level of mandatory use texts. The college bound exist but a majority of my students were 2-5 years below reading level. The authorities contend that the best way to raise reading levels is to read above reading level. No, they give up and discard the books and drop out of school. Isn’t is more prudent to use a 9th grade book at senior high wherein the students learn something rather than nothing at all ? The say the kids are to use inferential thinking to determine vocab meaning but how does that work when there is no knowledge foundation from which to infer ? Even basic Latin and Greek roots have not been taught for 3 decades.
